Arlington, Va. – Dominion National, a leading dental insurer and administrator of dental and vision benefits headquartered in Arlington, Va., announced that Jeff Schwab, Vice President of Marketing, will present How Preventive Dental Care Can Help Lower Costs for Chronic Disease Patients at the 2019 National Association of Dental Plans (NADP) Annual Conference on September 17 in Orlando, Fla. Schwab will be joined by Capital BlueCross Vice President of Ancillary Services, Chris Davis, and Geneia Vice President of Consulting Services and Clinical Innovation, Shelley Riser.

Schwab, Davis and Riser will present findings from a recent study indicating that people with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, who received preventive dental care covered by Capital BlueCross’ BlueCross Dental benefits were found to have fewer costly emergency room visits and hospital stays. The research compared medical costs and utilization between Capital BlueCross members with BlueCross Dental coverage who have chronic conditions and have received preventive dental services versus those who have not received preventive dental services.

The session will also provide insights regarding integration of care delivery between medical and dental plans to manage the population for chronic conditions as well as overall conditions from a medical and dental health perspective.

“We continue to see the impact that preventive dental care can have on our overall health and we are also finding financial benefits for individuals, employers and carriers,” said Schwab. “Increased integration between dental and medical plans, including targeted outreach to high-risk individuals to seek preventive dental care, can support disease management programs aimed at improving overall health outcomes and cost of care savings.”
